The video installation Longing was created before AI became widely accessible and is based on a dialogic process between the artist and an artificial intelligence, in which notions of longing and desire are explored. A central aspect of the work is the examination of the AI’s predefined response structures. Through long, progressive conversations, the artist was able to shift these structures and encourage the machine to engage in a more open exchange, beyond standardized references to its lack of emotionality. From this dialogue emerged a poetic text that can be read like a poem and engages with the AI’s longings and desires. Longing opens up a space in which technological systems become visible as independent, imaginative agents. The work was created at a time when AI was not yet widely accessible, positioning it as an early artistic exploration of what was then still a limited technological field.
